Top 10 best luxury hotel brands in the world

Over the past decades, the world of luxury hospitality has expanded at an extraordinary pace, with new five-star — and often self-proclaimed six- and seven-star — hotels appearing in almost every corner of the globe. For passionate travelers, this abundance is a gift: more choice, more design innovation, and more extraordinary destinations than ever before. Yet in reality, only a select group of hotel brands consistently delivers the level of refinement, authenticity, and emotional impact that truly defines modern luxury travel. In this article, I explore the top 10 best luxury hotel brands in the world, based on consistency, global footprint, service excellence, design identity, wellness offerings, gastronomy, and sustainability.

My personal favorite hotel brand remains Soneva, whose barefoot luxury philosophy and Maldivian resorts are, in my view, unmatched. However, because Soneva operates only three resorts in the Maldives, I have excluded it from this ranking to maintain a more global perspective. Instead, I have applied a simple but admittedly arbitrary rule: only hotel brands with at least 10 properties worldwide are included. This ensures a fair comparison between truly international hospitality groups that shape luxury travel at scale.

There is more information (with reviews and YouTube videos) below the slide show. Do you agree or do you have a favorite hotel brand that didn’t make my list? Leave a comment.

10. St. Regis

St. Regis is one of the flagship luxury hotel brands within the Marriott International portfolio, alongside The Ritz-Carlton. Rooted in a rich heritage and designed for discerning travelers seeking the finest experiences, the brand helped define modern luxury hospitality with the opening of The St. Regis New York in 1904. Commissioned by John Jacob Astor IV, the Beaux-Arts landmark on Manhattan’s Fifth Avenue set new standards for elegance, service, and innovation. Since then, St. Regis has remained synonymous with refined sophistication and highly personalized service. Its signature Butler Service — offered at every property worldwide — continues to be a defining feature of the brand more than a century later. Today, with more than 30 hotels and resorts across the globe, St. Regis seamlessly blends timeless glamour with contemporary luxury, delivering exceptional and consistently elevated guest experiences.

9. Waldorf Astoria

Waldorf Astoria is one of the most iconic names in global luxury hospitality, blending historic grandeur with contemporary refinement. As part of Hilton’s luxury portfolio, the brand traces its origins to the legendary Waldorf Astoria New York, which became a symbol of American elegance and high society in the late 19th century. Today, Waldorf Astoria operates a growing collection of landmark hotels and resorts in some of the world’s most desirable destinations, including major cities such as New York, Amsterdam, and Dubai, as well as resort locations like the Maldives and Seychelles. Known for striking architecture, opulent interiors, and a strong culinary focus with world-class dining concepts, Waldorf Astoria also emphasizes highly personalized service through its refined concierge approach rooted in its storied heritage. With an expanding global footprint and an emphasis on experiential luxury, the brand continues to evolve while staying true to its legacy as one of the most prestigious names in hospitality.

The brand is synonymous with its signature eco-chic design philosophy: authentic, sustainable, and deeply personal, with each property thoughtfully integrated into its natural or cultural surroundings. Six Senses resorts are designed to reflect and respect local traditions, creating an atmosphere that promotes wellbeing, supported by intuitive service and meticulous attention to detail. 7. Belmond

Belmond, part of the Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy (LVMH) group, is not just a luxury hotel brand but a curator of iconic travel experiences. Belmond’s portfolio includes legendary hotels, luxury trains, river cruises, and safari lodges across the globe. From Venice to Peru, and from Italy to Southeast Asia, Belmond specializes in journeys that combine heritage, storytelling, and refined luxury. The Belmond story began in 1976, when the company received the keys to the legendary Belmond Hotel Cipriani in Venice. A year later, they began collecting the carriages for the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, which launched in 1982 to whisk intrepid travelers to La Serenissima in style. Since then, Belmond has grown to a carefully curated collection of travel adventures, each with a rich story to tell. Today, Belmond continues to celebrate the unique art of slow travel, offering its guests immersive experiences that blend history, culture, and exceptional service.

6. Mandarin Oriental

Mandarin Oriental is a global benchmark for Asian-inspired luxury, combining legendary service with contemporary design and exceptional attention to detail. Originating from its two flagship properties — the iconic Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong, which opened in 1963 and set new standards for modern Asian hospitality, and the legendary Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok, long regarded as one of the world’s greatest city hotels on the banks of the Chao Phraya River — the brand has evolved into a globally respected portfolio of more than 40 hotels in key urban and resort destinations. Mandarin Oriental is particularly renowned for its award-winning spas, refined gastronomy, and strong architectural identity that reflects local culture while maintaining a consistent level of excellence. The Mandarin Oriental gotel group continues to expand strategically, focusing on landmark properties in cities such as London, Paris, New York, and Tokyo.

5. Four Seasons

Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts is arguably the most globally recognized luxury hotel brand in the world, with more than 120 properties across cities, islands, and remote destinations. Four Seasons was founded in 1960 by the young architect Isadore Sharp, but the real breakthrough of the brand came in the seventies with the opening of the Four Seasons London, which set the tone for the future direction of the company and pioneered many of the signature Four Seasons services now delivered worldwide. Whether in New York, Paris, Dubai, or the Maldives, Four Seasons delivers a seamless luxury experience defined by intuitive service and high-quality design. Its popularity has also surged in popular culture thanks to the hit series The White Lotus, which prominently features Four Seasons properties as filming locations, further cementing the brand’s image as the backdrop of modern luxury travel. The brand has also expanded into private residences, strengthening its position as a dominant force in global hospitality.

4. One&Only

The One&Only luxury hotel brand was created in 2002 exclusively for the luxury resort market by Solomon Kerzner – a South African accountant and business magnate – and now features some of the highest-rated resorts in the most idyllic spots in the world, such as the Maldives, Mexico, Rwanda and South Africa. The brand focuses exclusively on resorts, nature-focused lodges and ultra-luxury wilderness experiences, with each property designed as a standalone icon offering exceptional privacy, design, and service. Known for its glamorous yet relaxed atmosphere, the One&Only hotel brand combines world-class dining, curated experiences, and striking natural settings, making it a favorite among luxury travelers seeking exclusivity and adventure.

3. Rosewood

The Rosewood story began in 1979 when a historic mansion in Dallas, Texas, was transformed into an acclaimed, world-class restaurant and hotel – The Mansion on Turtle Creek – whose success was the blueprint for all subsequent Rosewood hotels and resorts. Today, Rosewood is defined by its “A Sense of Place” philosophy, creating ultra-luxury hotels that feel like private residences deeply connected to their surroundings. With properties in major cultural capitals and resort destinations, Rosewood emphasizes individuality, storytelling, and residential-style comfort. Each hotel is designed to reflect local history, architecture, and culture while delivering highly personalized service. The brand has become particularly popular among luxury travelers seeking understated elegance, privacy, and immersive experiences. Properties such as Hôtel de Crillon in Paris and Rosewood Hong Kong highlight the brand’s commitment to craftsmanship and refined sophistication.

With a growing portfolio of carefully curated properties in destinations such as Singapore, Bangkok, Ubud, Shanghai, Hanoi, Sydney, and Osaka, Capella focuses on highly personalized service, cultural storytelling, and exceptional design. Each hotel is crafted to reflect its location, blending contemporary architecture with local heritage and artistic expression. The brand is particularly known for its intuitive “Culturists” program, which curates bespoke guest experiences tailored to individual preferences. Capella represents the new generation of ultra-luxury hospitality: intimate, experiential, and deeply connected to place.

1. Aman

Aman represents the pinnacle of ultra-luxury minimalism, offering its guests a sense of peace and belonging amid some of the world’s most diverse natural and cultural landscapes. Founded in 1988 with Amanpuri in Thailand, the brand has built a global reputation for its architectural restraint and deep connection to place. Aman properties are often located in remote or culturally significant destinations, blending seamlessly into their surroundings. The experience is intentionally discreet, highly personalized, and deeply immersive. With just over 30 resorts worldwide, Aman remains one of the most exclusive and aspirational hotel brands in existence. Among Aman’s habitués is a group of passionate repeat guests — self-proclaimed “Aman junkies” (count me in) — who rave about the service and design aesthetic, and whose travel plans are often shaped by Aman locations.

  1. Though they don’t have a lot of hotels, I think Airelles is a fantastic luxury hotel brand.
