Sonevi Fushi or Soneva Jani Maldives: which one is best?

One of the leading hotel brands when it comes to sustainable tourism and barefoot luxury is Soneva, the hotel company that manages the two most impressive resorts in the Maldives: Soneva Fushi (located on its own tropical island) and Soneva Jani (located in a huge lagoon with five islands, four of them deserted). Chances are that these fabulous resorts have appeared on your radar (or in your Instagram feed) when you are planning a luxury holiday in the Maldives, since they both epitomize the ultimate Maldivian dream, providing guests with an exceptional one-of-a-kind holiday.

Many travelers who want to stay at Soneva Fushi or Soneva Jani often wonder which one is best, and that’s also the single most questioned I am asked about the Soneva Resorts. IMHI, Soneva Fushi offers more of a beach & island experience, with more to do and exceptional dining experiences. Soneva Jani offers more of an overwater experience, with incredible villas featuring slides and retractable roofs, and with a focus on tranquility and holistic wellness. My personal advice would be to stay at both resorts and to combine them in one and the same itinerary (4 to 5 nights in each resort) to experience the best of both worlds. Soneva operates daily transfers between both resorts (private or shared), so it’s very easy to get from Soneva Fushi to Soneva Jani or vice versa (just one hour by boat).

While this article focuses on comparing Soneva Fushi and Soneva Jani, it’s worth noting that Soneva Secret has been intentionally left out of this comparison. As Soneva’s newest and most exclusive property, Soneva Secret operates in a league of its own, offering an ultra-bespoke, highly personalized experience that goes beyond even the exceptional standards set by Soneva Fushi and Soneva Jani. For that reason, it doesn’t lend itself to a direct comparison, and is better considered as a category-defining retreat for travelers seeking the absolute pinnacle of privacy and luxury.

No matter which resort you choose to stay at (Soneva Fushi, Soneva Jani, Soneva Secret, or a combination of these resorts), once you’ve stayed at a Soneva Resort, that’s it: you’re in love. There’s no turning back. And apparently, I am not the only one who feels so passionate about Soneva: 60% of visitors to Soneva Fushi, the original luxury hotel in the Maldives, are returning guests.

1. ISLAND & BEACHES

Winner: Soneva fushi

Soneva Fushi is a tropical paradise unlike anywhere else in the Maldives. The entire island is cloaked in lush, verdant jungle and surrounded by dazzling white-sand beaches and an exceptionally clear, sparkling turquoise lagoon. From a scenic perspective, it is arguably the most idyllic island I have visited in the Maldives, while its soft, powdery beaches easily rank among the finest in the world. Importantly, Soneva Fushi does not have a traditional beach club. Instead, the resort’s jungle villas are scattered throughout the island, each with direct access to the beach and typically a couple of private sun loungers positioned on the sand in front of the villa. The result is an exceptionally natural and private beach experience that perfectly complements Soneva Fushi’s barefoot-luxury philosophy.

Soneva Jani’s two overwater villa jetties are connected to Medhufaru, one of the largest islands in the Maldives, which offers a distinctly different type of beauty. Unlike Soneva Fushi, Medhufaru is less densely covered in tropical vegetation and coconut palms, with mangroves forming its predominant ecosystem. The island is also not completely surrounded by beaches, with guests having access to two main stretches of sand, both featuring dedicated beach facilities. At the northern tip, near the North Jetty, North Beach has a smaller beach club and water sports center, while the much larger South Beach, close to the South Jetty, features a spacious beach club and several restaurants.

2. LAGOON

Winner: Soneva Jani

Soneva Jani is surrounded by a spectacular 5.6 km (3.5 mi) lagoon of crystal-clear water, offering uninterrupted 360-degree views across the Indian Ocean. It is arguably one of the most beautiful lagoons in the Maldives, with an extraordinary expanse of luminous turquoise water that seems to stretch endlessly towards the horizon. The lagoon is so vast that more than 7,000 Olympic-size swimming pools could fit inside it, yet it is the mesmerizing shades of blue that truly set it apart. Although the famous Maldivian palette of turquoise shallows and deep blue waters can be found throughout the archipelago, nowhere have I seen the colors quite as vibrant and clear as at Soneva Jani, particularly around the Chapter One jetty. Four of the five islands within the lagoon remain entirely undeveloped, adding to the extraordinary sense of space and making it easy to find your own deserted-island setting. Another advantage is that the lagoon around Soneva Jani has recently been cleared of seaweed, creating an exceptionally pristine and visually flawless seascape.

Soneva Fushi is also blessed with a stunning lagoon, although I would give Soneva Jani the edge when it comes to sheer visual impact. The waters around Soneva Fushi are more representative of the classic Maldivian landscape, with shallow, crystal-clear turquoise water surrounding the island before dropping sharply into deeper ocean just a few dozen meters offshore. This creates a striking transition from pale turquoise to deep blue, whereas at Soneva Jani, the shallow blue lagoon seems to extend almost endlessly in every direction. There is also a small compromise to the sense of complete isolation: Eydhafushi, the capital of Baa Atoll, lies approximately 650 m (2,100 ft) from Soneva Fushi’s sunset side and is visible on the horizon, including some concrete buildings and communication antennas. While this does not detract significantly from the beauty of the setting, Soneva Jani offers a stronger feeling of being completely surrounded by untouched ocean.

3. SNORKELING, DIVING & MARITIME WILDLIFE

Winner: Soneva Fushi

Soneva Fushi is located in the heart of the remote Baa Atoll, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve renowned for supporting one of the largest concentrations of coral reefs in the Indian Ocean. This exceptional marine environment makes Soneva Fushi a true paradise for divers, with a PADI-certified dive center offering guided excursions to more than 30 dive sites, including the famous Hanifaru Bay, one of the world’s most important gathering places for manta rays. You do not need to be a diver to enjoy the extraordinary marine life, however: snorkeling directly from Soneva Fushi’s house reef is superb, with colorful fish and corals easily accessible from the island. Turtles and dolphins are also frequently spotted in the waters around the resort, particularly on the sunset side, adding another dimension to the already impressive marine experience.

Soneva Jani’s lagoon is undeniably beautiful, but its shallow waters are not naturally as rich in marine life as those surrounding Soneva Fushi. That said, I noticed considerably more wildlife during my most recent visit than I had three years earlier, with harmless reef sharks and stingrays regularly cruising around the overwater villas. For the best snorkeling, Soneva Jani offers boat trips to the house reef located at the outer edge of the lagoon, where guests can discover abundant fish, corals of different species and impressive mature coral colonies forming a fascinating shallow underwater landscape. The surrounding waters also feature several excellent dive sites with rich marine life. Nevertheless, if snorkeling and scuba diving are a priority, I would choose Soneva Fushi, which has the clear advantage thanks to its exceptional house reef, greater marine biodiversity and proximity to some of the Maldives’ finest diving and manta-ray encounters.

4. VILLAS

Winner: Soneva Fushi for beach villas and Soneva Jani for overwater villas

Soneva Jani is primarily focused on the overwater villa experience, with 51 spectacular overwater villas complemented by a small number of beach villas, making it one of the lowest-density luxury resorts in the world. The scale is extraordinary, with both one-bedroom villas designed for couples and families with young children and expansive multi-bedroom residences for larger groups. The overwater villas are spread across two sinuous jetties extending from Medhufaru, curving across the turquoise lagoon like a snake. At more than 410 sq m (4,413 sq ft), even the one-bedroom villas are among the largest entry-level accommodations in the Indian Ocean. Every water villa features a large private swimming pool, direct access to the lagoon and, in most cases, a signature waterslide leading from the upper deck straight into the water. The North Jetty villas, known as Retreats (currently under renovation), and the South Jetty villas, known as Reserves, share a similar layout, although the newer South Jetty Reserves have a distinct advantage: they offer more shade and a greater amount of air-conditioned indoor space, including an air-conditioned lounge area, making them particularly comfortable during the hottest hours of the day.

Soneva Fushi places greater emphasis on the beach villa experience, with 64 thatched-roof villas discreetly scattered along the island’s coastline and hidden among dense tropical vegetation. Although largely invisible from the beach, every villa faces the Indian Ocean and comes with its own private garden and direct access to a stretch of pristine white-sand beach, creating an intimate Robinson Crusoe-style sense of seclusion. The villas are exceptionally spacious, ranging from one-bedroom Crusoe Villas to the extraordinary nine-bedroom Private Reserve, and many incorporate treehouse-inspired architecture that further enhances the castaway atmosphere. In 2021, Soneva Fushi expanded its accommodation offering with eight spacious one- and two-bedroom overwater villas, located along a gently curving jetty on the southern tip of the island. These villas follow a similar concept to those at Soneva Jani, although their design is more rustic and closely connected to Soneva Fushi’s natural, barefoot-luxury aesthetic. Overall, Soneva Jani is the stronger choice for an iconic overwater villa experience, while Soneva Fushi offers the more immersive private-island and beach-villa experience.

5. INSTAGRAM X-FACTOR & PHOTOGRAPHY

Winner: Soneva Jani

While the natural beauty of Soneva Fushi’s tropical island and pristine beaches is more understated, Soneva Jani offers arguably the most spectacular photo opportunities. For many luxury travelers and Instagram enthusiasts, it has become something of a holy grail. The sight of Soneva Jani’s two sinuous jetties (one of them currently being under renovation) stretching across surreal shades of blue, combined with the striking architecture of its overwater villas and restaurants, looks almost too perfect to be real and has made the resort instantly recognizable around the world. It is easy to see why images of Soneva Jani have been shared millions of times on Instagram: the resort feels almost as if its designers anticipated the visual language of social media. The iconic water slides are perhaps the ultimate example. Sliding from the upper deck of your private villa directly into the crystal-clear Maldivian lagoon is enormous fun, but it also happens to produce some spectacular photographs and videos. If you are looking for the most photogenic luxury resort in the Maldives, Soneva Jani is the clear winner.

6. RESTAURANTS

Winner: Soneva Fushi

Soneva Fushi arguably offers the best dining experience in the Maldives, with an impressive nine restaurants and dining venues combining spectacular settings, impeccable service and exceptional cuisine. Highlights include Fresh in the Garden, an elevated restaurant suspended above the jungle canopy, and Out of the Blue, an overwater dining complex housing five distinct culinary outlets, including an excellent teppanyaki table and a world-class sushi counter. One of the resort’s most memorable experiences is Flying Sauces, which combines fine dining with an exhilarating 200 m (656 ft) zipline ride: securely strapped into a harness, guests soar above the jungle to an elevated dining platform where a gourmet dinner awaits. Soneva Fushi has also established itself as a true culinary destination, regularly welcoming some of the world’s most celebrated and Michelin-starred chefs for special dining events and collaborations.

It is difficult to find a resort anywhere in the world that surpasses Soneva Fushi for food, although Soneva Jani comes remarkably close, with a dining scene that is every bit as imaginative and extravagant as the resort itself. The resort features nine restaurants and dining venues, complemented by a range of private dining experiences and destination-inspired cuisines. Standout venues include The Crab Shack, famously voted the “world’s most romantic restaurant” by CNN, and Overseas, created by acclaimed Swedish chef Mathias Dahlgren and specializing in plant-based and pescatarian cuisine. Soneva’s celebrated wine program is another major highlight, with an extensive collection and highly knowledgeable sommeliers. At Soneva Jani, the wine collection is displayed inside a striking glass tower, while approximately half of the wine list consists of organic and biodynamic selections. For overall dining, I would give Soneva Fushi a slight edge, but both resorts rank among the Maldives’ finest culinary destinations.

7. BREAKFAST

Winner: Soneva Fushi

Soneva Fushi serves one of the most lavish breakfast buffets I have ever encountered at a hotel anywhere in the world. The spread is extraordinary in both variety and quality, with a dedicated ham and cheese room featuring homemade cheeses, premium charcuterie and house-smoked salmon, alongside an extensive selection of Western and Asian dishes. Guests can also choose from freshly prepared delicacies cooked in the wood-fired rock oven, hot- and cold-smoke ovens, and traditional earthen tandoor. Another chilled room showcases an impressive selection of salads and vegetables, while an indoor fruit counter offers an almost astonishing variety of fresh tropical and seasonal fruits. It is an extravagant breakfast experience that perfectly reflects Soneva Fushi’s reputation as one of the Maldives’ leading culinary resorts.

Soneva Jani also offers an excellent breakfast experience, with two distinct breakfast venues. The first is located inside The Gathering, the spectacular multi-level overwater structure on the North Jetty (currently being rebuilt), while the second is a more casual beach shack on South Beach, close to the South Jetty. Both venues serve an extensive buffet alongside à la carte dishes, offering plenty of choice across international cuisines. However, while breakfast at Soneva Jani is certainly impressive, Soneva Fushi remains the clear winner. Its sheer variety, presentation and number of dedicated food stations make its breakfast buffet exceptionally difficult to match.

8. VEGAN DINING

Winner: Tie – Soneva Fushi & Soneva Jani

Organic and plant-based dining is central to Soneva’s philosophy, reflecting the brand’s commitment to holistic wellbeing, healthier living and more sustainable food practices. At both Soneva Fushi and Soneva Jani, red meat has been almost entirely removed from the menus, while the use of dairy products, refined sugars and refined flours has been significantly reduced. Both resorts also feature outstanding plant-based restaurants, although each takes a distinctly different approach to vegan cuisine.

At Soneva Fushi, Shades of Green is the Maldives’ first vegan restaurant and one of the resort’s most distinctive culinary experiences. The evening begins with a guided tour of the organic garden, where guests can pick, taste and smell fresh produce while discovering hidden amuse-bouches along the way. Created by Danish chef Carsten Kyster, the five tasting menus are inspired by the vibrant colors of freshly harvested ingredients: Purple, Yellow, Orange, Red and Green. The cuisine combines Maldivian and Southeast Asian flavors with Kyster’s Nordic culinary heritage, using traditional techniques such as smoking, salting, fermenting and pickling to bring out the natural flavors of the ingredients. Each menu features six courses — Cleansing, Crispy, Raw, Grains, Fire and Sweets — showcasing seasonal vegetables, fruits, herbs and salads grown at Soneva Fushi.

At Soneva Jani, So Wild by Diana von Cranach is a fully plant-based restaurant nestled within the resort’s organic garden. Drawing on more than five decades of experience in plant-focused cuisine, Diana von Cranach creates dishes inspired by Ayurveda and the ingredients cultivated at Soneva Jani. The internationally renowned raw-food chef and cookbook author has also delved into the culinary heritage of Southeast Asia and Indonesia, reviving historical recipes and adapting them to a contemporary plant-based setting. Ingredients are presented raw or prepared using techniques such as steaming, flash-frying and dehydration, resulting in a menu that is both creative and deeply connected to the natural surroundings. Both restaurants are exceptional, although Shades of Green offers the more immersive and theatrical experience, while So Wild places greater emphasis on raw-food traditions and Ayurvedic-inspired cuisine.

9. ALL INCLUSIVE CONCEPT

Guests staying at either Soneva Fushi or Soneva Jani can upgrade their stay to Soneva Unlimited, an exceptionally generous all-inclusive package designed to let guests enjoy virtually every aspect of the Soneva experience without worrying about additional charges. The package includes dining at all restaurants, bars and through in-villa dining, as well as alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, wines from the Soneva Unlimited selection, and access to Michelin-starred chef dinners and special culinary experiences. Perhaps most impressively, unlimited spa treatments are also included, making Soneva Unlimited particularly appealing to guests who plan to make extensive use of the resorts’ wellness facilities. The package further includes a dedicated Barefoot Butler, daily laundry service and daily replenishment of the in-villa minibar. Overall, Soneva Unlimited can significantly enhance the value of a stay, especially for guests who want to experience the resorts’ exceptional dining, wines and spa treatments to the fullest without constantly keeping track of additional costs.

10. COMPLIMENTARY CHOCOLATE AND ICE CREAM

Winner: Tie – Soneva Fushi and Soneva Jani

Soneva Fushi takes its complimentary ice cream and chocolate experience to extraordinary levels, with two chocolate and ice cream parlors: one near the arrival jetty and another inside the overwater dining complex Out of the Blue. Open from morning until late at night, both venues are available to all guests and offer an ever-changing selection of more than 60 homemade ice cream and sorbet flavors. Next door, the chocolate room is a dream for anyone with a sweet tooth, offering an enticing selection of handmade treats such as cardamom chocolate truffles and passionfruit pralines, with the selection constantly changing throughout the day. The fact that these indulgent treats are complimentary — and available virtually whenever you want — is one of the many playful touches that make the Soneva Fushi experience so memorable.

Soneva Jani also has two dedicated ice cream and chocolate rooms, offering more than 50 flavors of homemade ice cream and an extensive selection of handmade chocolates. The latter range from mousses and cookies to drinks, bonbons and truffles, with cocoa content reaching as high as 95%. One venue is located inside The Gathering, the spectacular overwater structure on the North Jetty (currently being rebuilt), while the other forms part of the dining complex on South Beach near the South Jetty. Both are open from breakfast through dinner, providing plenty of opportunities for an indulgent treat throughout the day. While both resorts excel in this wonderfully indulgent category, Soneva Fushi has the edge thanks to its larger selection and longer opening hours.

11. SPA & WELLNESS

Winner: Soneva Jani

Soneva Jani’s wellness center, Soneva Soul, opened in 2022 on Medhufaru island, close to the picturesque South Beach, and sets an impressive benchmark for holistic wellness in the Maldives. Designed to blend seamlessly with its spectacular natural surroundings, the facility features two indoor treatment rooms and three open-air treatment pavilions, all offering beautiful views over the island and lagoon. Soneva Soul also houses a dedicated Ayurvedic Clinic and an indoor consultation room for visiting wellness specialists. Beyond treatments, the facilities include a cross-functional fitness area and an open-air yoga pavilion equipped for aerial yoga, while a dedicated retail space sells sustainable clothing, wellness products and accessories. From both a design and setting perspective, Soneva Jani’s Soneva Soul is the more impressive of the two.

Soneva Fushi has also recently upgraded and expanded its own Soneva Soul, although its two-story wellness complex is less visually striking than its counterpart at Soneva Jani. Surrounded by dense tropical jungle, the tranquil setting places a strong emphasis on reconnecting with nature and creating a sense of calm and seclusion. The extensive treatment menu combines traditional healing practices and ancient rituals, including Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine and herbalism, with more contemporary approaches such as vitamin therapy and integrative medicine. Guests can also access advanced wellness treatments including cryotherapy, hyperbaric oxygen therapy and ozone therapy. Treatments are tailored to individual goals, ranging from relaxation, recovery and regeneration to detoxification, movement and health optimization.

12. ROMANCE

Winner: Soneva Jani

The Maldives is the epitome of a romantic holiday destination, and Soneva Jani takes the romance to another level. For couples and honeymooners, it offers an extraordinary combination of seclusion, nature and indulgent luxury, making it one of the world’s most memorable destinations for a romantic getaway. The resort’s spectacular overwater villas are particularly well suited to couples, with private pools overlooking the endless turquoise lagoon and, in most cases, a private water slide leading directly from the sun deck into the sea. Many villas also feature a retractable bedroom roof, allowing couples to fall asleep beneath the stars while surrounded by the tranquil sounds of the Indian Ocean. For a honeymoon or romantic escape, Soneva Jani is arguably one of the most enchanting resorts in the world.

13. FAMILY FRIENDLINESS

Soneva Fushi is an exceptional family-friendly resort, offering children and teenagers an adventure playground surrounded by nature. The resort’s outstanding kids’ club, The Den, provides an impressive range of indoor and outdoor activities, including a pirate ship, two swimming pools, LEGO and Duplo room, dress-up and makeup area, cinema, library, learning space and music room filled with instruments. Dedicated childminders are on hand to supervise younger guests, giving parents the opportunity to enjoy some well-deserved time alone. Beyond The Den, children can explore the island’s natural surroundings and discover the marine world alongside Soneva’s resident marine biologist, turning a family holiday into an experience that is both fun and educational.

Despite its reputation as a romantic honeymoon destination, Soneva Jani is equally impressive for families and is home to what is billed as the Maldives’ largest children’s club. The Den is designed as an adventure playground, with two spectacular waterfalls cascading into a large swimming pool and a zipline crossing the water before plunging through the falls. Just beyond the pool, children can explore a pirate ship and skateboard ramp, while indoor facilities include a bowling alley, LEGO and craft area, dressing-up room, library and cinema. Teenagers have their own dedicated space, The Hangout, featuring a music room, telescope deck, pool and foosball tables, pinball machines, table tennis above a reflecting pond and even a dry slide.

14. RESORT AMENITIES

Both Soneva Fushi and Soneva Jani offer an impressive range of facilities and amenities, although their layouts reflect the very different character of each resort.

At Soneva Jani, many of the resort’s main facilities are concentrated in The Gathering, a spectacular overwater structure on the North Jetty connected to the Chapter One water villas by a sinuous jetty. This multi-level building houses several restaurants, a bar, retail boutique, gym, small spa and conference room. Nearby are a bookstore, dive center and overwater observatory, while additional facilities are spread across Medhufaru island. These include a tennis court, organic garden, water sports center at North Beach, jungle gym, the open-air Cinema Paradiso and the impressive Soneva Soul wellness center. The result is an extensive collection of amenities, although guests often need to move between the overwater areas and the island to make full use of them.

Soneva Fushi, meanwhile, makes excellent use of its lush tropical island, with many of its facilities immersed in the jungle or positioned along the shoreline. Highlights include an observatory equipped with a high-powered telescope for stargazing, the Soleni Dive Center, where PADI-certified instructors organize excursions to more than 30 nearby dive sites, and the spectacular open-air Cinema Paradiso on the island’s northern tip. Guests can also make use of the recently upgraded spa and gym, tennis court and water sports center, which offers activities including paddleboarding, kayaking and surfing. While Soneva Jani has the more architecturally striking facilities, Soneva Fushi offers a more immersive and naturally integrated setting for its amenities.

15. SUSTAINABILITY

Winner: Tie – Soneva Jani & Soneva Fushi

Both Soneva Jani and Soneva Fushi place sustainability at the heart of their operations and are carbon neutral, while their lagoons and house reefs are protected areas. Marine conservation is a major focus, with dedicated coral reef nursery programs overseen by the resorts’ marine biologists, while teams also work to protect sea turtles and safeguard hatchlings. Waste management is equally ambitious: an advanced on-site recycling center processes around 90% of the resorts’ solid waste, while Soneva Fushi even operates its own glass studio, where discarded glass is transformed into new pieces for use in the resort’s villas and restaurants.

Sustainability is also incorporated into the design and day-to-day operation of the resorts. Villas at both Soneva Jani and Soneva Fushi use sustainable and repurposed materials, including recycled insulating materials, while natural ventilation helps reduce the need for air conditioning. Solar panels are used to heat water, and energy-efficient LED lighting helps reduce both electricity consumption and light pollution. On-site desalination plants make the resorts largely self-sufficient in water, while their organic gardens are irrigated using rainwater and provide herbs and leafy vegetables for the restaurants. Both resorts also work closely with local fishermen, prioritize local employment and have supported three neighboring islands in establishing more effective waste-management systems. Soneva’s approach goes well beyond simply minimizing environmental impact, with conservation, circularity and community engagement deeply integrated into the guest experience.
