Pros & Things I Like

Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi enjoys an excellent location in the South Malé Atoll, approximately 30 kilometers (19 miles) from Velana International Airport. One of the resort’s greatest advantages is its transfer experience, which is both more comfortable and significantly more convenient than the seaplane transfers required by many luxury resorts in the Maldives. Guests are transported directly from Malé aboard the resort’s luxurious private yacht, with the journey taking approximately 40 minutes. Unlike seaplane transfers, which often involve waiting several hours for connections and are restricted to daylight operations, the yacht can operate both day and night, allowing guests arriving on late international flights to travel directly to the resort without an overnight stay in the capital. Complimentary snacks, beverages and onboard Wi-Fi are offered throughout the crossing. Three private bedrooms are available on board, allowing guests to relax or even take a nap after a long-haul flight. As the yacht approaches Ithaafushi, spectacular views of turquoise lagoons, pristine white-sand beaches and overwater villas emerge on the horizon, creating a memorable first impression. Despite its proximity to the airport, the resort feels wonderfully secluded and peaceful, surrounded by crystal-clear waters and endless Indian Ocean vistas. The yacht transfer makes Waldorf Astoria Maldives one of the easiest high-end resorts in the Maldives to reach, while still delivering a true sense of tropical escape.

The dimensions and layout of Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi reflects the property’s extraordinary scale. Rather than occupying a single natural island, the resort is spread across a series of interconnected man-made islands and overwater structures arranged in a distinctive horseshoe shape around a vast turquoise lagoon. At the top of the horseshoe lies the main island, which serves as the social and recreational heart of the resort. Here, guests will find the principal beach, swimming pools, spa, and kids’ club. Extending from this hub are multiple islands and overwater jetties that form the two legs of the horseshoe, accommodating a large collection of beach and overwater villas. At the open end of the horseshoe sits Ithaafushi – The Private Island, an ultra-exclusive private-island retreat that ranks among the most luxurious accommodations in the Maldives. The exceptionally expansive resort spans approximately 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) from end to end, creating the impression of an exclusive private archipelago rather than a traditional island resort. Adding to this sense of discovery, the resort’s restaurants are intentionally scattered throughout the property, encouraging guests to explore different corners of the resort during their stay. Given the resort’s enormous footprint, walking everywhere is impractical, but an efficient fleet of buggies ensures transportation is quick and effortless. Guests are also provided with bicycles, allowing them to explore the resort independently and at their own pace.

Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi was designed through a collaboration of several renowned architectural and interior design firms. The resort’s master planning and architecture were primarily led by the New York-based firm Yuji Yamazaki Architecture, whose vision was to create a contemporary island retreat that maximizes the connection between guests and the surrounding ocean environment. The interiors were developed by design studio Stickman Tribe in collaboration with Highness Engineering Consultants, resulting in a cohesive aesthetic that combines modern luxury with tropical warmth. Rather than relying heavily on traditional Maldivian architecture, the resort embraces a sophisticated contemporary design characterized by clean lines, natural materials, expansive open spaces and seamless indoor-outdoor living. Throughout the property, stone, timber, glass and woven textures are used to create a harmonious relationship between the resort and its stunning natural setting. Floor-to-ceiling windows, oversized terraces and open-plan layouts ensure that the lagoon and ocean remain constant visual focal points. Mature vegetation, palm-lined pathways and thoughtfully designed gardens further contribute to a sense of place, while subtle lighting creates an intimate atmosphere after sunset. Despite the resort’s immense size, the design feels remarkably intimate, timeless and distinctly modern.

Waldorf Astoria Maldives features a total of 119 villas divided between beach villas, overwater villas and reef villas, all designed to offer exceptional space, privacy and comfort. During my holiday, I stayed in a Grand Overwater Villa, while I also had the opportunity to visit one of the beach villas. Both categories share essentially the same spacious layout and design, with the key difference being their setting: beach villas open directly onto a private stretch of sand, while overwater villas offer immediate access to the lagoon. My Grand Overwater Villa was exceptionally spacious and thoughtfully designed around three consecutive living spaces: a living room, a bedroom and a bathroom, all aligned along the length of the villa. Each section could be completely separated by sliding doors, allowing guests to create distinct private areas or maintain an open-plan layout. The interiors combined contemporary elegance with natural materials and subtle tropical influences, while the oversized bathroom featured double vanity, a freestanding soaking tub, indoor- and outdoor showers and beautiful, uninterrupted ocean views. One of the most striking architectural features was the enormous cathedral-like ceiling that extended throughout the villa, creating a tremendous sense of volume, light and grandeur rarely found in Maldivian resort accommodations. Floor-to-ceiling glass doors opened onto a vast outdoor deck featuring a large private infinity pool, sun loungers, and a shaded pavilion.

At the far end of the resort lies Ithaafushi – The Private Island, an exclusive sanctuary that represents the pinnacle of accommodation not only at Waldorf Astoria Maldives but also among the finest private-island retreats in the Maldives. Occupying its own island entirely separate from the main resort, this extraordinary estate features three individual residences: a spacious two-bedroom overwater villa, a three-bedroom beach villa, and an elegant four-bedroom residence located at the heart of the island. Together, they accommodate up to 24 guests, making Ithaafushi – The Private Island ideal for large families, groups of friends, or exclusive celebrations. Guests enjoy complete privacy while benefiting from dedicated personal concierge service, a private chef, multiple swimming pools, direct beach and lagoon access, a spa treatment villa, a fitness center, and a wealth of indoor and outdoor entertainment spaces. Offering an unmatched combination of space, exclusivity, and personalized luxury, Ithaafushi – The Private Island stands as one of the most extraordinary accommodations in the world and a true expression of Waldorf Astoria’s uncompromising vision of luxury hospitality.

Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi also excels when it comes to beaches and swimming pools. The resort’s main white-sand beach, located beside the central recreational area, forms the social heart of the property. Facing a calm lagoon that showcases the classic shades of blue for which the Maldives is famous, the beach club features dozens of sun loungers and provides easy access to the resort’s two lunchtime dining venues (Nava and The Ledge), water sports facilities and the resort’s main pool. The latter is a vast lagoon-style swimming pool, that is designed in a horseshoe shape mirroring the overall layout of the resort itself. Its shallow entries, generous proportions and tropical surroundings make it ideal for families and guests looking to spend an entire day relaxing by the water. Adjacent to this area, yet separated by lush vegetation, lies a second and much quieter pool. This large rectangular swimming pool is intended primarily for adults seeking a more tranquil atmosphere and also enjoys direct access to the beach. Beyond the central beach area, the resort’s numerous beach villas benefit from their own secluded stretches of sand spread across the various islands that make up the property. These private beaches offer a greater sense of exclusivity and often feel like personal tropical hideaways. Thanks to the resort’s expansive layout, each beach has its own character, with some overlooking broad lagoon vistas and others tucked away in more sheltered locations.

Nestled within lush tropical vegetation on the northern side of the main island, the Waldorf Astoria Spa occupies its own secluded enclave away from the resort’s more active areas, creating an immediate sense of serenity and escape. Suspended above the lagoon or tucked into the jungle, the treatment rooms are exceptionally spacious, featuring floor-to-ceiling windows, private terraces and freestanding bathtubs. The spa menu is extensive, combining internationally recognized wellness therapies with holistic treatments inspired by natural ingredients and local traditions. Beyond traditional massages and beauty rituals, the wellness offering includes personalized programs tailored to each guest through one-to-one consultations. These bespoke journeys can focus on Ayurveda, Detox & Slimming, Anti-Stress, Pain Relief or Beauty. Complementing the treatment facilities are an overwater yoga pavilion, multiple garden relaxation areas designed for lingering between therapies, a large, state-of-the-art fitness center, and several padel and tennis courts. The highlight of the entire complex, however, is the superb hydrotherapy area centered around a large vitality pool. Here, heated loungers, powerful massage jets and varying water pressures create a multisensory experience designed to stimulate circulation, ease muscle tension and promote deep relaxation. Combined with impeccable service and a peaceful setting, the spa ranks among the finest wellness facilities in the Maldives and is a destination in its own right.

Each venue is designed as its own destination, offering a unique concept, setting, and cuisine style — from treetop fine dining to beachfront grills and overwater Japanese izakaya. This diversity makes the resort one of the strongest culinary portfolios in the Indian Ocean.

Cons & Things To Know

Unlike many of the Maldives’ luxury resorts, Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi is built entirely on reclaimed, man-made islands. While the landscaping has matured considerably since the resort opened in 2019, it still lacks some of the dense tropical vegetation and natural character found on the archipelago’s natural islands. Likewise, although the beaches are undeniably beautiful, their sand is not quite as powder-soft as that of the Maldives’ finest natural islands. As a result, the resort’s artificial origins can occasionally be noticeable when walking barefoot along the shoreline, particularly for guests who have previously stayed on one of the Maldives’ natural islands.

During certain periods of the year, a large white event tent is erected near the resort’s main beach to host seasonal celebrations, weddings, and festive events such as Christmas and New Year. While it serves an important function and allows the resort to accommodate large-scale events, it can be something of an eyesore against the otherwise pristine tropical surroundings and may slightly detract from the views in parts of the beach area.

Guests staying in some of the sunrise-facing villas may notice distant construction activity on the horizon, where the future Atlantis The Royal Maldives Resort is being developed. The site is sufficiently far away that it has only a limited visual impact and is unlikely to disturb the tranquil atmosphere. Furthermore, the open end of Waldorf Astoria Maldives’ distinctive horseshoe-shaped layout faces away from the development, meaning that the vast majority of the resort enjoys uninterrupted views of the Indian Ocean.

Best Time To Visit

The best time to visit the Maldives is generally between January and April, when the weather is at its driest and sunniest. This period also coincides with the high season, bringing significantly higher hotel rates. The southwest monsoon typically runs from May to October, with June often being the wettest month. In my opinion, paying the premium for the dry season is worthwhile, as prolonged rainfall can significantly limit the resort experience, leaving little to do beyond dining, enjoying the spa, working out, or scuba diving. While November and December are often marketed as part of the dry season, they have proven increasingly unsettled in recent years, with a higher likelihood of rain and overcast conditions than many travelers expect.
