6. Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge, Jasper

1. Sonora Resort, British Columbia

Located on a remote island in British Columbia’s Desolation Sound, Sonora Resort occupies what is arguably one of the most spectacular settings of any luxury resort in Canada. Surrounded by snow-capped mountains, dense old-growth rainforest and pristine coastal waters, the resort feels completely immersed in the wilderness. The architecture and interiors have a more traditional character, and the rooms and architecture alone are not what place Sonora at the top of my list. Its greatest strength lies in its extraordinary natural setting and the experiences it makes possible. Guests can explore the surrounding wilderness by boat, kayak and helicopter, with opportunities to see grizzly bears, whales, dolphins and other wildlife, while spectacular excursions include helicopter trips to remote glacier-fed lakes. At the same time, Sonora offers all the amenities expected of a full-service luxury resort, including swimming pools, a spa, tennis courts, a fitness centre and inviting spaces to relax between excursions. Add excellent dining and an exceptionally peaceful atmosphere, and Sonora offers a form of luxury that is difficult to replicate. For me, it is ultimately this combination of place, privacy, resort amenities and access to nature that makes Sonora Resort such a special destination and puts it at the top of this list.
