2021 was supposed to be a thrilling year for new glamorous hotels opening across the globe. Unfortunately, the coronavirus pandemic continued to batter the world, posing major challenges to the hospitality industry. But as the world is slowly reopening to tourism – and closing again for several destinations – so have new hotels, offering some hope to travelers in unprecedented times. From Africa to the Americas and Asia to Europe, here’s my selection of the best new hotels (89 in total) that opened their doors in 2021. Some of these hotels are managed by the world’s most exclusive hotel brands.

1. KRUGER SHALATI, SOUTH AFRICA

2. DUMATAU & LITTLE DUMATAU, BOTSWANA

Nestled deep within the Linyanti Wildlife Reserve, on the northernmost fringe of Botswana, lies newly rebuilt DumaTau. The lodge takes full advantage of its 45 km (28 mi) of river frontage to create an unparalleled safari experience. Eight tented suites with private plunge pools sit on wooden walkways mere steps from the wildlife corridors, so animals often wander peacefully through camp. Interiors of hand-crafted mosaic tile, acacia wood, and local textiles reflect the heart of the Linyanti. The camp’s new spa, the Osprey Retreat, soothes your soul. 3. SUSSURO, MOZAMBIQUE

Seated on the secluded shores of a warm turquoise lagoon in Southern Mozambique, Sussurro is a thoughtfully designed lodge immersed in spectacular surroundings. Private bungalows provide over a thousand square feet of personal space surrounded by nature. Each suite includes indoor and outdoor bathing facilities and generous water front verandahs. Rooms are dressed with furniture created and carved onsite and thoughtfully collected artisanal pieces from sub-saharan African. A gallery, library, lap pool and yoga deck, bar and restaurant serving plant-rich menus of locally sourced produce complete Sussurro’s resort space. 4. KISAWA SANCTUARY, BENGUERRA ISLAND, MOZAMBIQUE

Located on Benguerra Island, Mozambique, Kisawa Sanctuary seeks to blend wilderness and service together to create a unique luxury resort. The resort is ideally located in the North Malé Atoll of the Maldives, which is a 45-minute journey by speedboat or 10-minute journey by seaplane from the Malé International Airport. 8. PATINA MALDIVES, FARI ISLANDS

Patina Maldives, Fari Islands is the inaugural flagship resort from Patina Hotels & Resorts, a new sophisticated lifestyle brand by Capella Hotel Group. Designed by renowned Brazilian architect Marcio Kogan, Patina Maldives offers 90 exquisite beach and water pool villas, ranging from one to three bedrooms, all of which will combine the harmony of sanctuary with stimulating experiences. 9. KUDA VILLINGILI RESORT MALDIVES

Kuda Villingili Resort Maldives is a private island where time and space are redefined, located only 30-minute speedboat ride from Malé’s Velana International Airport. 10. RAFFLES UDAIPUR, INDIA

Raffles Udaipur, a flagship hotel in the Raffles group’s portfolio, offers a fresh perspective on the city of Udaipur and region of Rajasthan, from a 21-acre private island set in the middle of the serene Udai Sagar Lake. 11. SIX SENSES FORT BARWARA, INDIA

Historic Rajasthan is the setting for a 14th century fort that has been beautifully converted to become Six Senses Fort Barwara, a three-hour drive from Jaipur. Originally owned by the Rajasthani Royal Family, the new Six Senses sits directly opposite the temple, Chauth ka Barwara Mandir. The sensitive conservation project features 48 suites and incorporates a palace and two temples within the walled site that reinterprets the gracious and regal ambience of a bygone era. Two restaurants serve classic dishes and modern cuisine based on fresh local ingredients, together with a bar and lounge. A 30,000 square foot (2,800 square meter) Six Senses Spa and fitness center is housed in the original women’s palace and features an extensive Ayurveda program, meditation and Six Senses Integrated Wellness programs. There are two swimming pools, banqueting areas, a retail boutique and a kid’s club.


12. ANDAZ BALI, INDONESIA

Offering a unique contemporary take on the traditional Balinese village and its way of life, Andaz Bali is located in the heart of Sanur, a quaint seaside village known for its old-world charm, picturesque beaches and spectacular sunrises. Designed by the Bangkok-based Tierra Design and Spin Design Studio in Tokyo, Andaz Bali features 149 guestrooms, all decorated in contemporary Balinese style, using locally sourced materials such as bamboo, marble and teakwood. Andaz Bali offers 5 innovative culinary venues inspired by the lively dining culture in Indonesia. Connected via an aromatic herb and flower garden, Shankha Spa in the adjacent Hyatt Regency Bali offers pampering treatments inspired by Balinese healing traditions using indigenous ingredients such as sea salt, pearl powder, coconut oil and spices.

13. BUAHAN, A BANYAN TREE ESCAPE, BALI, INDONESIA

Pioneering a “no walls, no doors” concept throughout the property and in each of its 16 balés (villas), Buahan, a Banyan Tree Escape, is an invitation into a different way of being. Situated in a quiet enclave surrounded by rice paddies and jungle, the site’s unique topography is next to the Ayung River and waterfall, including a sweeping view of the seven majestic peaks. 14. THE LANGHAM JAKARTA, INDONESIA

Capella Hanoi is a 47-bedroom boutique hotel designed by the illustrious architect Bill Bensley. Just mere steps away from the iconic Hanoi Opera House, this coveted palace of revelry has become the rendez-vous spot for opera’s greatest artists after the final curtain call. Each suite within the spellbinding property is individually designed to reveal tales of the mischievous opera society – told through over a thousand pieces of operatic memorabilia and custom portraiture art by prolific artist Kate Spencer. 16. REGENT PHU QUOC, VIETNAM

Regent Hotels & Resorts opened the brand’s eighth property globally and first in Vietnam on Long Beach in Phu Quoc Island, in the Gulf of Siam. 17. HYATT REGENCY PHNOM PHEN, CAMBODIA

Hyatt Regency Phnom Penh is the newest five-star luxury hotel located in the heart of the Cambodian capital.  Originally built as a Colonial villa in the early 20th century, a carefully restored lemon-colored Colonial House with wooden shutters, arched doorways and terracotta-tiled roof serves as the hotel’s entrance, providing guests with a nostalgic arrival experience. Behind the Colonial House stands a newly-constructed, 14-story main building, featuring 247 guestrooms, including 43 suites, all with hardwood floors and marble bathrooms. Guests staying on the 10th floor can access the Regency Club Lounge with dedicated check-in and check-out services, daily breakfast, evening hors d’oeuvres, and complimentary drinks. 19. FAUCHON HOTEL KYOTO, JAPAN

25. ACE HOTEL BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, USA

Ace Hotel Brooklyn is conveniently located near the Barclays Center, Brooklyn Botanic Garden, and unique local shops and restaurants including boutique sake brewery Brooklyn Kura and iconic chocolatier Li-Lac Chocolates. The 13-story property houses 287 rooms, a beautifully decorated lobby, an art gallery, and several food and beverage options. Building exteriors are decorated with a custom ceramic mural by artist Stan Bitters. This new hotel represent the largest oceanfront resort development in San Diego County for over half a century. Before casting its anchor in a natural refuge on Dugi Otok Island, the Villa Nai 3.3 sailed close to the wind and took a tremendous journey from a perfectly drawn geometrical blueprint to a property completely immersed in nature, unpretentious just like all other beauties adorning this island. The architect Nikola Bašić harbored the hotel, the oil mill and tasting room inside a hundred-year-old organic olive grove. The facilities are built from stone harvested from the olive grove. The interiors feature designer furniture in perfect sync with nature, throughout 8 deluxe accommodation units. 23 members of the villa crew learned the ropes tasked only with making our guests feel comfortable on their journey brimming with delight.
