Travel Tip: How to Stay for Free at a Luxury Hotel?

In a previous article, I explained how to secure the most discounted room rates and the best possible deals at luxury hotels to help you save a significant amount of money while traveling. Today, I want to take it one step further and explain how you can actually stay for free at a hotel. And I am not referring to budget properties. I am talking about complimentary stays at true luxury icons, including hotels from the portfolios of ultra-exclusive brands such as Rosewood, Mandarin Oriental and Aman.

In travel industry jargon, a complimentary hotel room is called a “comp.” Receiving a comp for one or more nights is the ultimate hotel perk and feels far more special than simply finding a good deal. If you have always dreamed of staying for free at a luxury hotel, keep reading and discover my nine proven travel strategies.

If you think I missed a useful tip, feel free to share your own travel tricks in the comments section.

1. Join a Hotel Loyalty Program

Today, almost every major hotel chain operates a loyalty program that allows members to earn points through hotel stays, flights, and affiliated credit card spending. These points can later be redeemed for free nights, including at luxury hotels. In addition to earning points, loyalty program members often receive valuable benefits such as complimentary upgrades, free Wi-Fi, late check-out, and sometimes even complimentary breakfast. The main requirement is that you book your stay directly through the hotel’s official website or an eligible partner such as a Virtuoso travel advisor.

When deciding which loyalty program is right for you, consider the following four factors:

  • The number of hotels in the chain’s portfolio, since larger chains offer more opportunities to earn and redeem points.
  • The specific elite benefits that matter most to you.
  • The countries you travel to most frequently, as some chains are better represented in certain regions.
  • The type of hotel experience you prefer, whether that is business, lifestyle, boutique, or ultra-luxury.

Some of the most important hotel loyalty programs that allow redemptions at luxury properties include:

  • Marriott Bonvoy, which includes brands such as The Ritz-Carlton, JW Marriott, St. Regis and W Hotels, and The Luxury Collection.
  • World of Hyatt , which includes Alila, Park Hyatt and Anda.
  • Hilton Honors, covering Waldorf Astoria and Conrad Hotels Resorts.
  • ALL – Accor Live Limitless, which includes Fairmont Hotels and Resort, Raffles Hotels & Resorts, and Sofitel.
  • IHG One Rewards, which includes InterContinental Hotels & Resorts and Six Senses.
  • Jumeirah One, which can be used for redemptions at iconic properties such as the Burj Al Arab.

Although many high-end luxury hotel brands – such as Four Seasons – are reluctant to operate traditional points-based programs, the major groups listed above still offer excellent opportunities to redeem points for free nights at some of the world’s most desirable hotels.

2. Book Your Stay with Hotels.com

Another effective way to earn free hotel nights is by booking through Hotels.com, which operates a straightforward loyalty program called Hotels.com Rewards. The concept is simple. After you book and stay ten eligible nights, you receive one free night. The value of that free night equals the average price of the ten nights you collected. This makes it easy to earn complimentary stays without tracking complicated point charts. I have personally redeemed several free nights this way, including a stay at the magnificent Four Seasons Hotel Firenze. When used strategically for luxury stays, this program can provide substantial savings.

3. Make Use of a Best Rate Guarantee

Best Rate Guarantee (BRG) programs are increasingly offered by hotel chains worldwide. These programs promise that you will receive the lowest publicly available rate when booking directly on the hotel’s official website. If you find a cheaper publicly available rate for the exact same room type, dates, and length of stay on another website, you can submit a claim. If approved, the hotel will match the lower rate and often provide an additional benefit, such as a further discount or bonus points.

For example, Marriott Bonvoy offers a choice between an extra 25% discount or 5,000 bonus points when a claim is approved under its Best Rate Guarantee. By consistently choosing bonus points, you can accumulate a significant balance that can later be redeemed for free luxury hotel stays.

To identify lower rates, you can compare prices on aggregator websites such as Trivago and HotelsCombined. By systematically checking rates and submitting claims when appropriate, you can effectively “hack” Best Rate Guarantee programs to generate free hotel stays over time.

4. Get a Hotel-Branded Credit Card

Many hotel chains offer co-branded credit cards that are directly linked to their loyalty programs. These credit cards allow you to earn hotel points through everyday purchases, including groceries, dining, and utility bills. The accumulated points can then be redeemed for free nights.

Some popular examples include:

While many of these cards are primarily available to residents of the United States, travelers in other countries can often transfer points from general rewards programs, such as American Express Membership Rewards, into hotel loyalty accounts to boost their balances.

5. Join an Airline’s Frequent Flyer Program

Frequent flyer programs are airline loyalty programs that reward you with miles or points every time you fly. Most travelers think of redeeming those miles for free flights or upgrades, but they can also be used for car rentals, merchandise, and even free hotel stays. In general, redeeming airline miles for hotel nights does not always provide the highest value, as flights tend to offer better redemption rates. However, there are notable exceptions. For example, members of Miles & More, the loyalty program of Lufthansa, can redeem miles for stays within the Hilton portfolio, including luxury brands such as Waldorf Astoria and Conrad Hotels & Resorts.

In recent years, airlines and hotel groups have also launched exclusive partnerships that make it easier than ever to earn free hotel nights while flying at 30,000 feet.

  • One example is the collaboration between Marriott Bonvoy and Emirates Skywards. Through this partnership, Marriott Bonvoy members earn three hotel points per US dollar spent on eligible Emirates flights, in addition to their Skywards miles. Those extra points can later be redeemed for free hotel stays. Elite Marriott members, including Platinum Elite, Titanium Elite, and Ambassador Elite, also receive additional airport benefits such as priority check-in and priority boarding when flying with Emirates.
  • Another strong partnership exists between American Airlines AAdvantage and World of Hyatt. In addition to earning AAdvantage miles when flying with American Airlines, eligible World of Hyatt members earn one bonus Hyatt point for every qualifying dollar spent on American flights. This dual earning structure accelerates your path toward free Hyatt hotel nights.

By strategically leveraging airline miles and hotel partnerships, you can turn your flights into valuable hotel rewards and move closer to your next complimentary luxury stay.

6. Take Advantage of Free Night Promotions

If you want to stay for free at a luxury hotel, always keep an eye out for free night hotel promotions. Many high-end properties regularly offer deals where you receive one complimentary night when booking a minimum number of paid nights, such as “Stay 4 Nights, Pay for 3.” These offers are usually only available when you book directly through the hotel’s official website. For that reason, it is wise to subscribe to the newsletters of your favorite luxury hotel brands so you are among the first to hear about upcoming promotions and limited-time offers.

One brand where these promotions can deliver exceptional value is Soneva, which operates extraordinary resorts in the Maldives. Soneva frequently launches special offers that include one or even two complimentary nights, often combined with additional perks. Considering that nightly rates at these ultra-luxury resorts can reach several thousand dollars, a free night promotion can result in substantial savings.

You can check current promotions for Soneva Fushi, Soneva Jani, and Soneva Secret directly on the Soneva website. By timing your booking around one of these offers, you can significantly reduce the cost of a dream stay at one of the world’s most exclusive resorts.

7. Complain Politely About a Troubling Experience

Even the most luxurious hotel stay can become disappointing when things do not go as planned. Problems such as major room defects, serious service failures, inaccurate descriptions of amenities, unexpected downgrades, or even overbookings can quickly ruin a trip. If you experience a significant issue that is clearly the hotel’s responsibility, you may be entitled to compensation. The key is to handle the situation professionally. Always raise the issue politely and calmly, either during your stay with hotel management or afterward through the hotel’s customer service department. A respectful and well-documented complaint often leads to a far better outcome than an emotional reaction.

In some cases, compensation can include a refund, bonus loyalty points, or even a complimentary future hotel stay. For example, I once faced an overbooking at the Mandarin Oriental, Munich. Despite having reserved the room months in advance, no room was available upon arrival. To resolve the situation, the hotel refunded my prepaid stay and provided a two-night voucher for a future visit.

While no traveler hopes for problems during a luxury trip, knowing how to respond effectively can sometimes turn a frustrating experience into an opportunity for a free hotel stay in the future.

8. Join the Travel Industry

Travel agents, meeting planners, and travel journalists often receive complimentary stays as recognition for the business and exposure they bring to hotels. Since hotels are not always fully occupied, providing rooms to industry professionals can be a mutually beneficial arrangement.

9. Use Social Media to Score Free Luxury Hotel Stays

Luxury hotels are increasingly leveraging social media to boost their visibility and attract new guests. As part of these promotional strategies, some hotels offer complimentary stays to select influencers in exchange for high-quality exposure on platforms like Instagram or YouTube.

If you have a substantial following—typically 100,000 or more—and your social media content aligns with a hotel’s brand and aesthetic, you may qualify for perks ranging from exclusive discounts to completely free nights. The key is to actively promote the property during your stay by creating engaging content that showcases the hotel’s amenities, experiences, and surroundings.

A notable example comes from a travel blogger who spent five free nights at The Mulia Bali, where nightly rates range from $400 to $1,000, thanks to her 400,000+ Instagram followers. By producing content that matched the resort’s luxury image, she secured a fully complimentary stay For aspiring travel influencers, partnering with luxury hotels can be a powerful way to enjoy free stays while building your brand.

  1. There is nothing worse than sharing your luxury hotel stay with a social influencer. This would actively make me want to complain. Unless it’s a dog.
