Review: Mulia Villas & Mulia Resort

I previously published a review of The Mulia, which forms part of the larger Mulia enclave in Nusa Dua, a sprawling beachfront complex that also includes Mulia Villas and Mulia Resort. While the three properties share the same immaculate grounds and exceptional service standards, they each cater to a slightly different audience. Set on a hillside, Mulia Villas is the most private and exclusive option, offering secluded luxury with personal pools and expansive living spaces. The Mulia Bali, positioned directly on the beachfront, leans toward a more refined, all-suite experience with a tranquil ambiance. Meanwhile, Mulia Resort is the largest and most lively of the trio, featuring hundreds of rooms, multiple pools, and a vibrant social atmosphere. Together, they form a cohesive yet diverse resort destination that can accommodate everything from romantic getaways to family holidays. In this article, I’ll take an in-depth look at Mulia Villas and Mulia Resort.

Pros & Things I Like

The arrival experience at Mulia Villas sets the tone immediately. Guests are welcomed through a dedicated entrance that leads to a pavilion housing an elegant lobby with sweeping views of the resort and the Indian Ocean. One floor below the lobby, reached via a grand staircase, a beautifully designed space called The Living Room doubles as a serene lounge and a restaurant, where breakfast and afternoon tea are served. The Living Room provides direct access to the main pool area (the Aqua Pool) which is perfectly positioned above the villas and boasts a dramatic infinity edge overlooking the entire Mulia enclave and the ocean beyond. Reserved exclusively for guests of Mulia Villas and The Mulia, the pool area maintains a serene, almost private atmosphere. Plush daybeds and sun loungers are scattered throughout, but it never feels crowded — largely because each villa comes with its own pool.

Accommodation at Mulia Villas is truly exceptional. The property features 108 villas, among the largest in Bali, ranging from one-bedroom retreats to the expansive six-bedroom Mulia Mansion. Each villa is set within its own generous garden and includes a hydrotherapy swimming pool, allowing guests to enjoy spa-like water therapy at any time. The design cleverly blends indoor and outdoor living, with a separate Balinese-style pavilion and doors that can fully open to invite in the ocean breeze. The decor strikes a balance between classic elegance and traditional Balinese accents, creating spaces that feel luxurious yet welcoming rather than overly formal. Bathrooms are equally indulgent, with both indoor and outdoor showers as well as a Jacuzzi tub. During my stay, I occupied a two-bedroom villa, which felt incredibly spacious and perfectly suited for both relaxation and entertaining.

Beyond the beautiful lobby pavilion, The Living Room, and the Aqua Pool, Mulia Villas itself remains intentionally minimal in terms of facilities. This is very much by design, as the focus here is on privacy and the villa experience. However, guests are far from limited in options. Staying at Mulia Villas grants full access to the extensive amenities of The Mulia Bali and Mulia Resort, which both enjoy a prime beachfront location. This means you can seamlessly transition from the tranquility of your private villa to the more dynamic environments of the other two properties. Whether you’re in the mood for beachfront relaxation, a variety of dining experiences, a signature spa treatment, or exploring different pool settings, everything is just a short buggy ride away — with buggies available 24/7 — making the overall experience both exclusive and versatile.

For guests staying at Mulia Villas, access to The Mulia Bali adds an entirely different dimension to the experience. As the enclave’s most refined beachfront property, The Mulia Bali is composed exclusively of suites and offers a calm, sophisticated atmosphere that feels worlds away from the livelier areas of the resort complex. Its elegantly designed pool stretches along the shoreline, providing uninterrupted views of the Indian Ocean, while the pristine beach — with its soft sand and attentive service — enhances the sense of understated luxury. Many guests of Mulia Villas naturally gravitate here during their stay, drawn by the direct beach access and the exceptional pool setting. It’s the perfect complement to the privacy of the villas, offering a serene yet polished environment for those moments when you want to be by the sea while still enjoying the exclusivity of the Mulia enclave.

In contrast, Mulia Resort — also accessible to guests staying at Mulia Villas — impresses with its scale and vibrant energy. The lobby alone is a striking architectural statement, featuring grand proportions, multiple lounge areas, and an outdoor terrace that offers panoramic views over the ocean. The resort’s defining feature, however, is its remarkable collection of pools. The Ladies Courtyard Pool, adorned with large statues of Balinese women carrying flowers, sits gracefully at the heart of the resort. Nearby, the Courtyard Pool provides a lush, garden-surrounded retreat that feels like a true tropical oasis. A short stroll from the Courtyard Pool is the Splash Pool, which offers a dedicated space for younger guests, featuring playful water fountains and plenty of room to splash around. Then there is the Oceanfront Pool, located just steps from the beach, where dramatic statues and sweeping sea views create a visually stunning setting. Each pool has its own distinct character, ensuring there is always a perfect spot to match your mood.

At Mulia Villas itself, the on-site dining offering is limited to The Living Room, which serves breakfast and afternoon tea in an elegant setting. However, guests of Mulia Villas enjoy full access to all dining venues across the Mulia enclave, significantly expanding the culinary experience. Most restaurants are located within the grounds of Mulia Resort. The Café is a standout for all-day dining, featuring multiple live cooking stations that present a wide variety of international cuisines, from Asian specialties to European classics. For Japanese fare, Edogin offers an engaging teppanyaki experience alongside a refined selection of traditional dishes. Chinese cuisine is elevated at Table8, where an extensive menu showcases flavors from across China’s major culinary regions. Meanwhile, Soleil presents a vibrant blend of Mediterranean and Asian influences, combining fresh seafood, house-made pastas, and dishes inspired by Vietnam and Thailand.

The Mulia Spa, located within the grounds of Mulia Resort and just a short buggy ride from Mulia Villas, is a sanctuary dedicated to wellbeing and restoration. The spa offers an extensive menu of treatments inspired by both traditional Balinese rituals and modern wellness practices. Spread across 20 beautifully appointed treatment rooms, the experience includes therapeutic massages, bespoke facials, and signature journeys designed to relax both mind and body. Beyond individual treatments, the spa’s facilities — including hydrotherapy pools, steam rooms, saunas, and Asia-Pacific’s first dedicated ice room — elevate the sense of rejuvenation. To complement the treatments, Mulia Bali also offers mindful activities: sunrise yoga sessions in the lush tropical gardens help clear the mind and invigorate the body, while optional sound healing meditation sessions provide reflective moments for reconnection and inner peace.

Cons & Things To Know

While Mulia Villas offers privacy and luxury, one potential drawback is the limited on-site facilities. Aside from the lobby pavilion, The Living Room, and the Aqua Pool, the villas themselves do not feature gyms, spas, or additional recreational spaces. Guests seeking a self-contained resort experience may find themselves relying on The Mulia Bali or Mulia Resort for most activities and amenities, which requires a short buggy ride. Depending on which area of the enclave you want to visit, these rides typically take between 5 to 15 minutes. While this is part of the enclave’s design for exclusivity, it may not suit travelers who prefer everything within immediate walking distance.

Another consideration for guests at Mulia Villas is its hillside location. Unlike The Mulia Bali or Mulia Resort, the villas are not directly beachfront but set on a gentle hill beside the other two properties. While this provides incredible privacy and panoramic scenery, accessing the beach at The Mulia requires a buggy ride of around 10 minutes — not including potential wait times for the buggy. For travelers who prioritize direct beach access, The Mulia Bali is likely the better choice. Personally, this is also the main reason I preferred spending time at The Mulia itself during my stay at Mulia Villas and why I found myself returning there repeatedly to enjoy the beach and beachfront pools.

The location, while stunning, feels somewhat removed from local Balinese culture and attractions. Mulia Villas sits within a private enclave in Nusa Dua, meaning guests are immersed in resort luxury but not necessarily in the local neighborhoods, markets, or cultural sites. For travelers hoping to explore traditional Balinese villages or nightlife without arranging transport, the villas may feel somewhat isolated. This trade-off, however, is balanced by the extraordinary privacy, ocean views, and tranquility that the villas provide.

Finally, in terms of design, the villas feature a contemporary, modern style that some might describe as bordering on opulent, with extensive use of walnut veneer and red-colored marble throughout. While many guests appreciate this luxurious aesthetic, it may not suit everyone’s personal taste. Unlike more traditional Balinese properties, the design does not strongly evoke local culture or create a strong sense of place, so those seeking an authentic Balinese atmosphere might find the style somewhat impersonal or detached from its surroundings.

Best Time To Visit

The best time to visit Bali is generally during the dry season, which runs from May to September. During these months, the island experiences lower humidity, plenty of sunshine, and minimal rainfall, making it ideal for outdoor activities such as beachgoing, sightseeing, hiking, and water sports. June, July, and August offer the most reliable weather, although they are also the busiest and most expensive months due to high tourist demand.

The months of May, June, and September are often considered the most balanced time to visit. Weather conditions are still excellent, but crowds are lighter and prices tend to be more reasonable than during peak season. This period is particularly well suited for travelers who want to explore the island comfortably while avoiding the busiest times.

The wet season lasts from October to April and is characterized by higher humidity and short but intense tropical rain showers, most commonly in the afternoons or evenings. While January and February are typically the wettest months, travel during the wet season can still be enjoyable, especially for visitors focused on wellness retreats, cultural experiences, or a quieter atmosphere. During this time, the landscape is especially lush and accommodation rates are often lower.

How To Get There

From Ngurah Rai International Airport, you can reach Mulia Villas and Mulia Resort by taking a taxi or a pre-arranged hotel transfer for a comfortable 25–30 minute drive to Nusa Dua, with the hotel transfer being the easiest option as staff will meet you at arrivals and take you to the resort.
